SERVICE N.S./MUNICIPAL RELATIONS--Bridgewater to Add Sanitary Sewers and Watermains

The Town of Bridgewater will soon be installing a new sanitary sewer and water system along LaHave Street funded through the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program.

Joint federal-provincial funding in the amount of $1,116,666 was announced today by Robert Thibault, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, on behalf of Gerry Byrne, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and by Angus MacIsaac, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. It is one of six project approvals totalling more than $7.8 million.

"The LaHave Street South project we are announcing today is a good example of how the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program invests in green projects that contribute to creating strong healthy communities with quality water systems and a clean environment," said Mr. Thibault.

Green municipal infrastructure to ensure effective wastewater management and safe drinking water is the first priority under the program. The majority of the federal and provincial funding announced in Year One is being directed to green projects, like the Bridgewater sewer, water and street upgrade.

"We've listened to the people of Bridgewater and are responding to their needs -- to improve their wastewater system, clean up the environment and assist in meeting future growth," said Mr. MacIsaac.

The $1,675,000 Bridgewater project will provide for the construction of sanitary sewers, a storm drainage system and a water main to be installed along LaHave Street South. The project will improve municipal water and sewer services, but residents will also benefit from a wider, safer LaHave Street, which will be upgraded in the process. The project will also lay the necessary infrastructure for future development and enhance access to recreational areas.

The federal and provincial funding under the program is subject to the formal acceptance of the Town of Bridgewater, which will fund the balance of the project.

"It is with great pleasure that I make today's announcement," said Bridgewater Mayor Ernie Bolivar. "The LaHave Street project is an important component of the town's development plans and provides needed infrastructure to improve essential services."

This is one of a series of approval announcements for projects under the program. To date, 51 projects have been approved during the first year of the program, representing an investment of more than $58 million. Additional announcements are expected as projects undergo environmental assessment and final approval.

The $195 million, six-year Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program is administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation is a member of the management committee. The Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities is represented on the program's management committee.
