On April 1 the Department of Natural Resources will open the moose licence application phone line. Qualified hunters can call the 1-900 number to apply for one of 200 licences available to hunt moose in the fall of 2002.

"This is the second year that applicants for the moose draw will be able to use the telephone application system," said Natural Resources Minister Ernest Fage. "I believe that overall, people liked the convenience of applying by just picking up their telephone. The same convenience is enjoyed by those who use the 1-900 line to apply for the antlerless deer draw."

When a person calls the 1-900 number, a non-refundable application fee of $6.90 will be charged to the telephone bill of the phone that is being used. The application fee will be charged each time the 1-900 line is called.

This is not a toll-free or an inquiry line. People with inquiries should contact the Department of Natural Resources nearest them before calling this number.

In addition, all applicants should have their Firearm Hunting certificate or Bowhunting certificate numbers on hand when they call.

Information on how to apply and application criteria are available at department offices and through the Internet at www.gov.ns.ca/natr/hunt/draws.htm . Members of the public wishing to apply off-line can obtain application forms from Department of Natural Resources offices.

Applications for moose hunting licences will be accepted from April 1 to May 31. Hunters can call 1-900-565-3337 to apply 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A public draw announcing the successful applicants will take place on July 4 at 12:30 p.m. at Memorial High School in Sydney Mines.

More than 13,000 people applied for moose licences last year. The moose season runs from Sept. 30 to Oct. 12 in Inverness and Victoria counties.
