STATUS OF WOMEN--Status of Women Applauds Support for Young Families

Rita Warner, chair of the Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women, said today's provincial government announcement about improvements to child care in the province is welcome news.

"I personally know young women who would dearly like to have a family but simply can't afford it, in part because of child-care difficulties. What we heard today is a step in the right direction," said Ms. Warner.

The advisory council supports action for families with children with special needs. The life-long advantage that comes to children who get early intervention with language and learning difficulties can't be underestimated. Provision of better services in this area is long-overdue.

"Mothers are still the main providers of care to children, with or without special needs. The frustration of mothers when they don't have qualified help to meet their children's needs can only be imagined," Ms. Warner. "We are happy that there will be some relief and assistance for them and their families."

The Advisory Council on the Status of Women is marking its 25th anniversary this year. The need for quality child care for families has been on the council's agenda from the beginning, and it continues to be a central concern.
