NATURAL RESOURCES--Federal Provincial Parks Council Meets in Halifax

The Federal Provincial Parks Council is holding its fall conference in Halifax today and Tuesday, Sept. 23 and 24.

The conference is an opportunity for federal and provincial parks staff, as well as non-government organizations, to review issues affecting the park systems across Canada. The focus this year is on ecotourism and parks and protected areas management.

"Our park systems play an important role in the education, health and overall well-being of Canadians," said Natural Resources Minister Tim Olive. "Nova Scotia is committed to conservation, and our parks and protected areas play an integral role in meeting our international and national commitments."

As part of this meeting, four Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources staff will be presented with a Federal Provincial Parks Council merit award for their contribution to the park system in Nova Scotia.

"All four of these employees have made a significant contribution to the provincial park system through their work with the department over the years," said Mr. Olive. "Without the dedication of these staff, it would not be possible to offer our visitors such a rewarding experience when they visit our parks."

The four staff members receiving the award are:

  • Roger Aggas, regional director in the central region, for being instrumental in introducing the computerized registration and reservation systems in the provincial park system and for co- ordinating the implementation of these two systems;

  • John Murray, a forester who has helped develop the registration and reservation systems and who continues to provide support for staff who use the systems;

  • Webster Andrews, a forest technician who has overseen the operation of provincial camping and day-use parks in Kings County for 12 years; and

  • Marty Murphy, chief caretaker at Graves Island Provincial Park, who has been dedicated to the development of the park and ensuring that park visitors have enjoyed their stay and park experience.

The fall conference of the Federal Provincial Parks Council is composed of senior park managers from provincial, territorial and federal jurisdictions.
