NATURAL RESOURCES--Season Extended at Cape Chignecto Provincial Park

Cape Chignecto Provincial Park, Cumberland Co., is extending its operating season this year until Monday, Nov. 11. Natural Resources Minister Tim Olive made the announcement today, Oct. 4.

"This extension will allow additional opportunities for visitors to hike and camp at Cape Chignecto and to fully enjoy our colourful fall season," he said. "The local community and park users will both benefit from the longer season, and it will have a positive impact on tourism in the Advocate area."

Cape Chignecto Provincial Park opened in 1998 and is managed and operated by the community through the Cumberland Regional Economic Development Authority. Although it is part of the provincial parks system, the Department of Natural Resources has a management agreement with the authority, who staff and run the park.

The 4,200-hectare wilderness park has more than 50 kilometres of hiking trails, spectacular coastal views and abundant natural history. The park offers a visitor information and interpretation centre at Red Rocks, a gift shop, a wilderness camp, back-country hike-in camping and walk-in camping.

The park was originally scheduled to close on Oct. 14.
