SERVICE N.S/MUNICIPAL RELATIONS--Improved Drinking Water Supply for Dingwall

Residents of Dingwall, Victoria Co., can look forward to a healthier water supply because of a $500,000 project funded through the Canada-Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program.

Joint federal-provincial funding of $333,332 was announced today, Nov. 15, by MP Mark Eyking, on behalf of Gerry Byrne, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and by MLA Frank Chipman, on behalf of Angus MacIsaac, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. The Municipality of the County of Victoria will fund the $166,668 balance upon formal acceptance of the agreement.

"The government of Canada is committed to projects that improve the quality of life of Nova Scotians," said Mr. Eyking. "Through the Canada-Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program, we are investing in green projects that contribute to creating strong healthy communities with quality drinking water and a clean environment."

Green municipal infrastructure to ensure effective wastewater management and safe drinking water is the first priority under the program. The majority of the federal and provincial funding announced to date has been directed to green projects.

"Residents of Dingwall will notice an immediate improvement in the quality of drinking water. Providing Nova Scotians with safe water supplies is a priority for our government," said Mr. Chipman. "Through the Canada-Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program, we are able to achieve this goal in dozens of communities across the province."

The Dingwall Water Supply and Treatment Upgrade project involves the design and construction of a new water treatment facility and water supply. It will replace the existing supply originating from the Aspy River, which is high in organic content. When combined with chlorine for disinfection, this organic content creates Trihalomethanes (THMs), which are associated with health risks. This project will supply improved drinking water to about 100 households.

"Our community is very excited about today's announcement," said Victoria County Warden Gerald Sampson. "The health and safety of Dingwall residents is our primary concern, and the improvements we will now be making to our water supply will bring cleaner, safer drinking water to our area residents."

This is one of a series of approval announcements for projects under the infrastructure program. To date, 86 projects have been announced, representing an investment of more than $123 million. Additional announcements are expected as projects undergo environmental assessment and final approval.

The $195 million, six-year Canada-Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program is administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation is a member of the management committee. The Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities is represented on the program's management committee.
