NATURAL RESOURCES--Nominations Sought for 2003 Woodlot Owner of the Year

It is now easier to nominate owners of private woodlots in Nova Scotia for the Woodlot Owner of the Year award. Online applications are available for those wishing to recognize woodlot owners for their outstanding stewardship and good management.

All nominations must be submitted to the Department of Natural Resources by Friday, Jan. 31. The online form can be found at www.gov.ns.ca/natr/extension/woya/applic.htm .

Any resident of Nova Scotia who owns between 20 and 400 hectares (50 and 1000 acres) of woodland and agrees to host a public education and information field day on their woodlot is eligible for the annual award. Natural Resources employees, regional winners from the last three years and provincial winners from the last 10 years are not eligible.

"It is important that Nova Scotians recognize the many positive activities of private woodlot owners across the province and take the time to nominate those deserving recognition," said Natural Resources Minister Tim Olive. "Each year this prestigious award recognizes one woodlot owner who has put extra thought and care into their managing their woodlot sustainably."

Nominations are evaluated based on a variety of criteria, such as the quality of harvesting practices, the environmental standards being exercised, and the owner's efforts to improve the condition and health of their woodlands.

In addition to the award, the winning landowner also receives a plaque from the minister, a large sign to post onsite and a major prize donated from a sponsoring manufacturer. Past winners of the woodlot owner of the year award include Les Corkum of Falmouth, Hants Co.; Don and Katy Moore of Upper Kennetcook, Hants Co.; Tom and Bill Skinner of South Berwick, Kings Co.; Harold Hearn of Princedale, Annapolis Co.; George Chisholm of Bear River, Digby Co.; Earle Tanner of Hardwood Lands, Hants Co.; and Maxie MacNeil of Highland Hill, Victoria Co.

Individuals and organizations can also submit nominations for the woodlot owner of the year award to any office of the Department of Natural Resources. The forms can also be sent directly to Dale Glennie, Department of Natural Resources, PO Box 698, Halifax, N.S., B3J 2T9; by fax to 902-424-7735; by e-mail to woodlot@gov.ns.ca; or online.

The nomination must include the owner's name, address, telephone number, size and location of woodlot, a brief paragraph stating why this person deserves the nomination, and the nominator's name and phone number.
