Stellarton Workshop on Politics

Status of Women

The Advisory Council on the Status of Women is sponsoring a workshop for women interested in getting more involved in public affairs and the political life of their community, the province and Canada.

The workshop will be held Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Heather Hotel and Convention Centre in Stellarton from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"Of all the provinces in Canada, Nova Scotia has the smallest percentage of women in its legislature," said Rita Warner, chair of the council. "We need to change that."

The workshop is designed to let women reflect on the kinds of political and leadership experiences they've had so far, and to inform women about the process for applying to the many government agencies, boards and commissions. It will also encourage women to find ways to become active in their community, municipality, province or country.

"We hope that women in the Pictou County area take advantage of this opportunity," said Ms. Warner. "We held workshops in Yarmouth, Amherst, Port Hawkesbury and Sydney with a very positive reception".

The workshop is free and lunch will be provided. To register for the workshop, which is limited to 25 women, call 1-800-565-8662.
