Construction Begins on New Correctional Facility

Justice

Construction of the new Southwest Nova Scotia Correctional Facility is officially under way. Ground for the new 2,835- square-metre building was broken by Justice Minister Jamie Muir and Transportation and Public Works Minister Michael Baker today, Jan. 28, in Yarmouth.

The Southwest Nova Scotia Correctional Facility is being built by Maxim 2000 Inc. and will be located at the intersection of Haley Road and Forest Street. It will house 38 inmates and is expected to cost about $7.8 million.

"We're replacing a building that dates back to 1862," said Mr. Muir. "This project brings us into the 21st century, and will pump about $2.3 million into the local economy."

"This project will provide a healthy, secure environment for our dedicated correctional workers in Yarmouth. The new correctional facility is an important investment that has enjoyed the support of the entire community," said Mr. Baker.

Architect John Dobbs and Associates designed the building, which is expected to be similar in design to the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Burnside and which will feature state-of the-art security features.
