Tourism and Culture (Aug. 1999 - Dec. 2003)

Helen Creighton's legacy lives on in a Nova Scotia Archives and Records Management (NSARM) Web site celebrating the life and work of the late Dartmouth folklorist.

Dr. Creighton's 60-year career is documented and celebrated through writings, photographs, sound recordings and moving images contained in the online resource.

"This collection is truly one of Nova Scotia's most significant cultural heritage resources," said Rodney MacDonald, Minister responsible for Nova Scotia Archives and Records Management. "Dr. Creighton captured the diversity of Maritime culture through her extensive work with the Gaelic, Acadian, Mi'kmaq, English, German and African-Nova Scotian traditions."

The Web site at www.gov.ns.ca/nsarm/virtual/creighton/ showcases some of the oral traditions she gathered from cultures across the province, including ancient ballads, folk tales, children's folklore, proverbs, ghost stories and superstitions.

"We're pleased to launch the Helen Creighton site, our latest online resource," said Brian Speirs, provincial archivist. "We work hard to bring our collections to new audiences. Putting our resources online makes them accessible to just about everyone."

NSARM boasts other online exhibits such as the Halifax Explosion Remembrance Book and A Vision of Regeneration, launched in December to mark the 85th anniversary of the Halifax explosion. A complete listing of the exhibits can be found at www.gov.ns.ca/nsarm/virtual/ .

To date NSARM has launched 12 online resources, including virtual exhibits, online holdings and resource guides. Another three launches are planned for this year.
