An athlete from Sherbrooke, Guysborough Co., is Team Nova Scotia's first medalist at the 2003 Canada Winter Games.

Sarah Ackermann, 15, won a bronze medal in the women's air pistol competition Tuesday, March 4. Despite one bad shot in the medal round, she had enough good rounds to gain 447.9 points and the third place finish.

"I was amazed and proud that shooting got the first medal for Team Nova Scotia," said Ms. Ackermann. "It's very exciting."

She also had a personal best of 358 points in the preliminary rounds that qualified her for the medal round. Her teammate, Stan Selig of Halifax, finished fourth in the men's air pistol competition in Bathurst, N.B.

Nova Scotia is guaranteed at least another bronze, in boxing. Dartmouth boxer Alonzo Johnson won his match against Prince Edward Island on Tuesday night. If he wins against Quebec on Thursday, he'll advance to the gold medal round.

The men's curling team is also on a roll, defeating Saskatchewan 6-2 and Newfoundland 10-6 Tuesday at the Bathurst Curling Club. The team is from the Glooscap Curling Club in Kentville, Kings Co. Its record is now 3-1.

Figure skater Lars Anderson of Halifax is in fifth place in the novice men's competition after his short program performance in Campbellton on Tuesday. He will skate his long program today, March 5. The dance duo of Britney Gennette of Dartmouth and Joseph Scott of West Porters Lake are tied for second as they head into their long program today.

The women's hockey team has a win, a tie and a loss. The team faces Alberta tonight in Beresford.

Judo athletes Matthew Hachey of West LaHave, Lunenburg Co., Amy Hayward of Westville, Pictou Co., and Nicole Bohemier of Dartmouth all placed fifth in their respective weight categories in Campbellton.

Table tennis athletes competed in the team event and maintained the seventh place ranking achieved by Team Nova Scotia in the 1999 Games in Corner Brook, NL. They now move into individual competitions in Bathurst.

Archer Matthieu Boudreau of Concession, Digby Co., placed fourth in men's compound.

The artistic gymnastics team finished in eighth place in the team competition Tuesday. Three Halifax athletes have advanced to individual competitions. They are Vaughan Arthur, Jordan Bureau and Stephan Saulnier.

Alpine skier Meagon Beaton of Lower Sackville came in 15th in a field of 46 competitors in the super giant slalom. Kyle Hofrichter of Rose Bay, Lunenburg Co., placed 18th, just 2.9 seconds behind the first place finisher.

Alpine skiing events are taking place at Mount Restigouche in Quebec. It's the first time that Canada Games events are taking place in two provinces.

Team Nova Scotia is competing in 18 of the 21 sports represented during the two weeks of the Games, which run from Feb. 22 to March 8. The team has 284 athletes, coaches, managers and mission staff.

Team Nova Scotia is funded by the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission, a division of the Office of Health Promotion. Team Nova Scotia sponsors include Avis, Spring Rain, ATV and Aliant. The Atlantic Lottery Corporation sponsors Team Atlantic -- supporting all teams from Atlantic Canada for the 2003 Games.
