TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Inverness Mine Remediation Work Moves Forward

The province will remediate the former Inverness coal mine site, a move that will create economic development opportunities for the community of Inverness.

A tender to cap the site is being advertised in newspapers.

"We promised to invest in the renewal of this area, and we're following through on our commitment," said Michael Baker, Minister of Transportation and Public Works.

Rodney MacDonald, Minister of Tourism and Culture, welcomed the tender announcement, saying it will prepare the community for increased tourism opportunities in the Inverness area.

"Private sector plans to develop this site will be a great asset to tourism in Inverness, Cape Breton and Nova Scotia," said Mr. MacDonald.

The 60-hectare site, northwest of Inverness, was once the site of an extensive underground coal mining operation.
