NATURAL RESOURCES--Fire Ban Lifted in Central and Eastern Nova Scotia

The Department of Natural Resources has lifted the ban on open fires in central and eastern Nova Scotia effective noon today, Aug. 7.

"The significant rain amounts this past week have dropped the fire hazard to a level where it is appropriate to lift the ban on open fires," said Natural Resources Minister Tim Olive.

The recent wet weather has resulted in a drop in hazard levels for the fire weather index (FWI) and the build-up index (BUI). The BUI, which measures the moisture in the woods and soils, has dropped to low to moderate over 85 per cent of the central and eastern region. The fire weather index, a general index of woodland fire danger, is low in about 95 per cent of the region.
