Assistant Chef de Mission Named for 2005 Games

A Halifax physical education teacher and school athletics director has been named Team Nova Scotia's assistant chef de mission for the 2005 Canada Summer Games in Regina, Sask.

Susan Beazley will help chef de mission Russell MacDonald of Groves Point, Cape Breton lead the team of athletes, coaches, managers and mission staff to the Games in August 2005.

Ms. Beazley will also use the experience to prepare for assuming the chef de mission position for the 2007 Canada Winter Games in the Yukon.

"Susan has been a valuable member of Team Nova Scotia both as an athlete and as mission staff," said Health Promotion Minister Rodney MacDonald. "She's dedicated her life to sport and I know she will bring dedication and enthusiasm to this job to help our athletes succeed."

Ms. Beazley has been leading students at Armbrae Academy in physical education and amateur sport for 26 years. She competed at the Canada Games in 1973 and 1977 on Nova Scotia's field hockey team. She went to the 2001 Games on the province's mission staff.

"I know how important and encouraging it was as an athlete to have the full support of my mission staff," said Ms. Beazley. "Now it's my turn to lead mission staff in giving our athletes, coaches and managers all the support they need to have an exceptional experience at the 2005 Games."

Ms. Beazley and Mr. MacDonald will lead the country's only fully volunteer mission staff to the Games. They will prepare and coordinate about 450 athletes, coaches, managers and artists on Team Nova Scotia for the two-week event.

Mission staff are now being recruited for the upcoming Canada Summer Games which will take place from Aug. 6 to 20, 2005. Application information is at www.ns.canadagames.ca . The deadline for applying is Dec. 19, 2003.
