Doris Mason comes home to New Glasgow on Saturday, March 6, to headline a concert in celebration of International Women's Day.

The Pictou County Celebrating Women's Committee and Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women are producing the concert, which will highlight local talents and celebrate the achievements and contributions of 12 Pictou County women.

"The advisory council works with community organizations to help advance women's issues," said Carolyn Bolivar-Getson, Minister responsible for the advisory council. "It's a pleasure to work with these organizations whose mandate is to help women in need."

Performers at the concert will include the Carillon Singers, Cheryl Layes, North Nova Education Centre Senior Jazz Ensemble, the Williams Sisters, Linda Little, The East Boyz and Edna Peppard with Fleur Mainville.

"The concert is an important fundraising opportunity for the Pictou County Women's Centre and the Tearmann Society for Abused Women," said Bernadette MacDonald, Pictou County Women's Centre.

Major concert sponsors are CBC, the advisory council, Glasgow Square, Kimberly Clark, CUPE, The New Glasgow Evening News, CKEC Radio, Advocate Printing and Via Rail.

The event takes place at Glasgow Square Theatre, New Glasgow. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with entertainment starting at 7:30 p.m.

International Women's Day, March 8, is a time to reflect on and celebrate women's accomplishments. The United Nations officially recognized the day in 1977, although its labour movement roots are much older.

Programs to mark and celebrate the day across the province can be found on the Advisory Council on the Status of Women website at, www.gov.ns.ca/staw .
