Minister To Host Shelburne Meeting

Justice

Justice Minister Michael Baker and three of his cabinet colleagues will travel to Shelburne on Monday, April 5 to meet with local government and economic development officials about the future of the Shelburne Youth Facility campus.

"When I spoke with concerned parties before we announced the closure of the Shelburne campus, I committed to involving other members of cabinet in a broader discussion about the region's economic strategy," said the minister. "We appreciate the chance to further that consultation, by meeting with community leaders who have such an important role to play in the region's economic future."

The province announced on Feb. 10 that the almost empty youth centre would close. The two remaining youths in the facility have since been transferred to the Nova Scotia Youth Facility in Waterville. The Shelburne facility officially closes on April 1.

Mr. Baker will be accompanied by Economic Development Minister Ernest Fage, Human Resources Minister Carolyn Bolivar-Getson, and Education Minister Jamie Muir. Other people expected to participate include MLA Cecil O'Donnell and representatives from the Town of Shelburne, Town of Lockeport, Municipality of the District of Shelburne, the Southwest Shore Development Authority and the Shelburne and Area Chamber of Commerce.
