Corrections Review Completed

Justice

A review of employment practices within Correctional Services has made 133 recommendations to improve policies and practices that affect African Canadian, Aboriginal, female and disabled staff.

"I want to thank the managers and staff within Correctional Services for their involvement," said Justice Minister Michael Baker.

"We all stand to gain when practical suggestions come forward to support productive, efficient work environments. We have an obligation to make sure all staff know what their rights and responsibilities are when it comes to fair and equitable treatment in the workplace."

Mr. Baker said the Department of Justice will give prompt consideration to the report's recommendations. One recommendation calls for the deputy minister to prepare an official response by June 30. "We will appoint a departmental team to explore the recommendations and to work toward that deadline," said Mr. Baker.

The review was done over a six-month period and included:
employee surveys that were sent to 688 staff; interviews; focus groups; and a review of applicable legislation, regulations, policies and collective agreements.

There is no additional cost to the taxpayer. The report's author, Ms. Terry Mills, was on secondment from the Department of Education.
