SERVICE N.S./MUNICIPAL RELATIONS--Province Invests in Three Infrastructure Projects

Residents of Mahone Bay, Ingonish and Granville Ferry can look forward to water quality improvements through three projects being funded by the Nova Scotia government.

The projects include expanding the Granville Ferry well field, building a central water system for Ingonish Beach, and upgrading the water system in Mahone Bay.

"The province is investing $758,226 in these projects," said Barry Barnet, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. "These investments will help create stronger and healthier communities. They'll improve the quality of life for these Nova Scotians by ensuring that they have a safe and stable supply of clean, quality water.

The provincial funding will be through the Canada-Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program. Since 2001, the Nova Scotia government has invested more than $64 million in 131 projects across the province through the program.

Details on the projects announced today are as follows:

Water System Upgrade - Phase 1 Town of Mahone Bay Shared total project cost: $959,679 ($319,893 provincial)

This project will provide for the design and construction of Phase 1 of the Town of Mahone Bay's water system upgrade. It will include upgrading the raw water transmission and pumping systems, installation of treated water storage and a pilot test of nanofiltration, the recommended treatment process. About 350 households will have improved water quality and a more reliable supply.

Granville Ferry Well Field Expansion Municipality of the County of Annapolis Shared total project cost: $120,000 ($40,000 provincial)

This project provides for the development of a third well to be connected to the Granville Ferry well field water supply. It includes the drilling and testing of the new well, installing a new well pump, connecting a well-field header to the treatment system and reservoir, and modifying the existing chlorination system to enable purification of the water supply.

Ingonish Beach Central Water System Municipality of the County of Victoria Shared total project cost: $2,400,000 ($398,333 provincial)
