HEALTH PROMOTION--Nova Scotia Well Represented at Canadian Lifesaving Championships

Nova Scotia will have an impressive showing in Quebec this weekend with 12 athletes registered for the 27th annual Canadian Lifesaving Pool Championship, hosted by the Lifesaving Society. The event is taking place in Longueuil and Montreal from May 27 to 30.

"This competition is positive not only because the lifeguards get more experience reacting under pressure, but because they also further develop the lifesaving skills needed to be a better lifeguard," said Paul D'Eon, director of the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service.

This national championship is the culmination of smaller competitions throughout Canada this past spring and winter. Nova Scotians participated in the Lifesaving Pool Series, co-ordinated by the Lifesaving Society, Nova Scotia Branch, in conjunction with the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service. Events at the final competition include water safety, an iron guard race, obstacle swim and first aid simulations.

The following athletes were selected from their home teams, to form two Nova Scotia teams at the competition:

  • Erin MacDonald, Team Dartmouth
  • Kyle MacIsaac, Team Dartmouth
  • Mike Maguire, Team Dartmouth
  • Beth Mudge, Team East Hants
  • Scott Keeling, Team East Hants
  • Dan O'Brien, Team East Hants
  • Adrian Spencer, Team Halifax Regional Municipality
  • Meredith Wills, Team Halifax Regional Municipality
  • Bryan Grant, Team Halifax Regional Municipality
  • Stephane Degenais, Team Dalplex
  • Ryan Salsbury, Team Dalplex
  • Kerianne Ryan, Team Dalplex.

The goals of the Lifesaving Society are to promote the development and improvement of lifesaving skills in Nova Scotia; to increase participation in, and awareness of, the sport of lifesaving among Nova Scotian lifeguards, lifesavers and the Nova Scotia sporting community; and to do so while promoting safe, enjoyable competition.
