Advisory Council Welcomes New Members

Status of Women

The Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women is welcoming three new appointments and two re-appointments recently approved by the legislature's human resources standing committee.

Three new members -- Maria de Vries of Kingsburg, Lunenburg Co.; Jean d'Entremont of West Pubnico, Yarmouth Co.; and Janette Peterson of Annapolis Valley First Nation, Kings Co. -- are being appointed for two-year terms that began June 1.

"The diversity of council ensures that it better reflects Nova Scotia women," said Carolyn Bolivar-Getson, Status of Women minister. "The new appointments continue an essential tradition, and I look forward to working with these women."

Sonja Power of Amherst, Cumberland Co., and Rita Warner of Judique, Inverness Co., were reappointed as members of the council. Ms. Warner is a past-chair.

"We need to encourage women to be active in bodies that advise government and that make decisions in this province," said Doreen Paris, advisory council chair. "The advisory council is one of many ways women can fulfil these roles and I'm proud of our new and returning members for their willingness to serve all women in Nova Scotia."

Each advisory council member is a link between council and the women in her community. The council brings to the attention of the minister matters of interest and concern to women. They also advise the minister on the wide variety of matters affecting the status of women.
