TOURISM, CULTURE AND HERITAGE--Culture Funding for Port Hawksbury Civic Centre

The new Port Hawksbury Civic Centre is getting a $13,000 boost as it opens its doors this weekend.

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Heritage, Rodney MacDonald, made the announcement today, Nov. 25.

"Culture will be an important part of this new civic centre," said Mr. MacDonald. "We are pleased to help with the centre's official opening, including a special showing of the critically acclaimed DRUM! performance."

The funding assistance is provided under the department's Industries Program, which recognizes that involvement in cultural activities contributes to the social, economic, educational and spiritual life of a community. The program aims to support opportunities for people to participate in and build community cultural life.

"From live concerts and shows, to sporting events and business conventions, the civic centre is building the community of Port Hawksbury and enriching the region," said Mr. MacDonald.

The $16-million Port Hawksbury Civic Centre officially opens this weekend. The new facility contains a walking track, fitness centre, arts & crafts studio, dance studio, racquetball and squash courts, and an NHL-size ice surface.
