TOURISM, CULTURE AND HERITAGE--Another Successful Tourism Appearance in Toronto

Nova Scotia has once again dominated one of Canada's largest consumer travel shows as part of provincial tourism efforts to attract more visitors from Ontario.

Thirty-four Nova Scotia tourism operators, with about 80 delegates from across the province, attended the Toronto Travel and Leisure Show held April 21-23. The show provides an opportunity for tourism operators to present their products and services to more than 20,000 consumers and 1,500 travel agents. More than 250 exhibits from across Canada and from the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean were on display this year.

"The goal is to create awareness of Nova Scotia as a world-class vacation and travel destination," said Rodney MacDonald, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Heritage. "The effort appears to be working. We have seen an increase in the number of visitors from Ontario during the past three years."

Tourism revenues in Nova Scotia were $1.29 billion in 2004. Ontario visitors represented 18 per cent of the total number of visitors to Nova Scotia last year. Visitors from Ontario stay an average of nine nights in Nova Scotia and spend an average of $220 a day.

This is the third year in a row that Nova Scotia has had one of the largest pavilions on the Toronto show-room floor. The pavilion featured boat building and canoe construction activities on display, along with a number of Nova Scotia entertainers.
