Appointments to Arts and Culture Partnership Council
Two new members and three returning members have been appointed to the Nova Scotia Arts and Culture Partnership Council.
The two new members are Laurie Swim of Lunenburg and Wanda George of Canning who have been appointed for three years. Ted Cavanagh and Donna Wellard have been appointed as returning members for one year.
Ms. Swim is an author and visual artist, specializing in textile art. Her work can be seen in collections across the continent, including the American Craft Museum in New York and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. She has an extensive background in community art projects, as well as corporate and individual commissions.
Ms. George is an assistant professor in the department of business administration and tourism management at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax. She has written and presented extensively on tourism and culture in rural communities.
"The council's work is helping shape the initiatives the province undertakes in support of the arts and culture sector in Nova Scotia," said Rodney MacDonald, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Heritage. "I look forward to receiving ongoing recommendations from this dedicated group of volunteers."
Paul Gallant has also been appointed as a returning member for three years and has also been re-elected as chair of the council for one year.
"I am delighted to have new members as we continue planning for the future of the culture sector in Nova Scotia," said Mr. Gallant. "Everyone brings varied and valued skills to the table and this latest round of appointments is no exception."
The partnership council began operating in 2003. In consultation with those involved in arts and culture, its members provide advice to guide the department's ongoing investments in Nova Scotia's artists, cultural industries and cultural activities.
The council members represent a cross-section of Nova Scotians with geographic and cultural diversity, who provide a broad range of experience in the culture sector. The executive of the council includes: chair, Paul Gallant of Cheticamp; vice chair, Joella Foulds of Southside Boularderie; and secretary, Terry Kelly of Halifax.
Other council members include: Wayne MacGillivary, Pictou; Laura MacNutt, Dartmouth; Donald Julian, Millbrook; Karen Casselman, Cheverie; Jenni Blackmore, Seaforth; Donald Ferguson, Glace Bay; and Dianne Coish and Marcel McKeough, representing the culture division, Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage.
