Province Supports Community Festivals and Events

Tourism, Culture and Heritage (Dec. 2003 - Jan. 2011)

Nova Scotia residents and visitors are enjoying more than 100 community festivals and events this year thanks to ongoing support from the province.

Tourism, Culture and Heritage Minister Rodney MacDonald announced today, Aug. 24, that a total of $104,000 will be provided to 130 festivals and events throughout the province under the Destination Opportunities Program.

"Festivals and events are a great way for visitors to discover and share in the celebration of our unique culture," said Mr. MacDonald. "Our communities are rich with history and tradition. Through our art, music, dance, food, stories and activities, visitors can experience our way of life first-hand."

The Destination Opportunities Program provides funding assistance to festivals and events that help attract visitors to the province and can influence the amount they spend during their visit. The province shares up to 50 per cent of the cost of marketing activities with the festival or event organizer. Organizers submit applications once a year through the province's eight tourism associations.

"In Nova Scotia, festivals and events are an important component of our tourism product," said Charley Clerk, chair, Tourism Partnership Council. "These celebrations attract many visitors to the province and help to develop the tourism industry."
