Province Buys Coastline Property

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

More coastal land will be preserved for the enjoyment of Nova Scotians and tourists in the future thanks to the province's purchase of about 30 hectares (74 acres) of property at Cape George, Antigonish Co.

The $585,000 property, which borders St. Georges Bay, is bounded to the south by Cape George Point Park and is adjacent to the Cape George Lighthouse -- a prominent tourist attraction.

Health Minister Angus MacIsaac is announcing the province's purchase today, Nov. 15, on behalf of Natural Resources Minister Richard Hurlburt.

"Our government is committed to preserving and protecting our environment for future generations, particularly our coastline," said Mr. MacIsaac. "Our culture is defined by the sea, with more than 9,000 kilometres of coastline. Preservation of, and access to, this coastline is vital to Nova Scotians and important to those who visit our province."

Since 2003, the government has purchased 23,370 hectares (57,748 acres) of land throughout the province. Thirteen per cent of these properties have been coastal.
