Enforcement Partners Launch Operation Aware

Off-highway riders, boaters, fishers and campers across Nova Scotia will be subject to spot checks this holiday weekend to make sure they are playing by the rules.

The Department of Natural Resources, RCMP, Halifax Regional Police and Transport Canada's office of boating safety will launch Operation Aware today, May 17, with a show of helicopters (weather permitting), boats, trucks, motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles at DeWolfe Park in Bedford.

"This weekend, we will focus on the safe and proper use of off-highway vehicles," said John Mombourquette, director of enforcement, Department of Natural Resources. " Failing to wear a helmet, driving on public highways, operating without registration and operating while under the influence of alcohol are some examples of what we will be checking for."

Mr. Mombourquette added that conservation officers will also drop in on remote fishing locations and campsites.

Brian Elson, boating safety officer with Transport Canada, said boaters on lakes, rivers and harbours this weekend will be checked to make sure they have mandatory safety equipment, including flotation devices.

"As many as nine out of 10 boating deaths could have been prevented if the boater had worn a personal flotation device," said Mr. Elson. "The office of boating safety will also check for operator competency cards and illegal use of alcohol."

"The RCMP in Nova Scotia are proud to be in this partnership, working together with all enforcement agencies to promote safe homes and safe communities," said Sgt. Frank Skidmore. "Along with ensuring compliance, we hope to further educate people about laws designed to protect them and the public."

The agencies involved in Operation Aware will continue their practice of working together throughout the year on provincial enforcement issues.
