Justice

The new Cape Breton Youth Detention Facility has been established in Gardiner Mines, Cape Breton Co. It is located alongside the existing Cape Breton Correctional Facility and will officially open for use on Monday, Aug. 28.

The facility consists of five single cells and will hold youth for a time period of up to 72 hours. When there is a lengthy court appearance, this time line will be extended. Following a conviction, the young person will be transported to the Nova Scotia Youth Centre located in Waterville, Kings Co.

"This new facility will allow young people access to appropriate services in a more up-to-date environment," said Justice Minister Murray Scott.

The previous youth detention facility in Cape Breton was located in Glace Bay.
