Police and Peace Officers' Memorial Day Act Proclaimed

Justice

The people of Nova Scotia now have a special day on which to officially recognize the selfless actions of peace officers slain in the line of duty.

The Police and Peace Officers' Memorial Act designates the third Sunday of each October as a day to honour peace officers who have given their lives protecting others.

"While these individuals deserve our recognition and gratitude every day, an annually designated day will ensure that we take the time to recognize their commitment to their fellow Nova Scotians," said Justice Minister Murray Scott.

Peace officers in Nova Scotia include municipal police, RCMP, sheriffs, correctional officers and others.

On Sunday, Oct. 15, Mr. Scott will attend the annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service, honouring peace officers slain in the line of duty. The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Basilica, 1508 Barrington St., Halifax.
