Residents in east Dartmouth will soon enjoy a new recreation centre thanks to funding through the Canada-Nova Scotia Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund.

The project will provide for the design and construction of a new community facility for the Boys and Girls Club of East Dartmouth.
The federal funding of $1,100,601 was announced today, Oct. 12, by Peter MacKay, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. The Nova Scotia Department of Health Promotion and Protection had previously committed $1,100,000 towards the community centre. Halifax Regional Municipality will fund the balance of the $3.3- million project.

"Congratulations to the people of east Dartmouth for their hard work and dedication to build a new community centre," said Brooke Taylor, Minister of Agriculture, on behalf of Jamie Muir, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. "Through the Department of Health Promotion and Protection, we are proud to be part of this project that will not only be the focal point of this community, but will also encourage a healthy lifestyle."

The facility will house a gymnasium, multipurpose room, meeting rooms, offices and a kitchen. It will also exceed the energy efficient standards for new buildings in Canada.

"Canada's investment in this community centre reflects our commitment to putting families first and our focus on making our communities stronger," said Mr. MacKay.

The Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund supports community infrastructure improvements.

"This investment in the east Dartmouth community centre is an investment in the health and wellness of East Dartmouth residents," said Peter Kelly, mayor of Halifax Regional Municipality. "The centre will encourage sports and recreation to residents of all ages."

"The addition of this centre to east Dartmouth will strengthen the community and will offer services to all members of the community regardless of age and income," said John Burton, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of East Dartmouth. "I am very pleased that this project is moving forward and I'm excited about what it will mean to east Dartmouth."

The $111 million, six-year Canada-Nova Scotia Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund is administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation and the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities are members of the management committee.
