Curling Teams Named for Canada Games
Eight Nova Scotia curlers hope to sweep away the competition in Whitehorse, Yukon, at the 2007 Canada Winter Games.
The final two teams were selected after a major bonspiel in the fall where 16 teams squared off against each other.
The women's team will compete during week one of competition and is coached by Bill Fletcher and managed by Donalda Mattie. The team consists of:
- Emily MacRae, lead, Fall River, Halifax Regional Municipality
- Courtney Huestis, second, Bedford
- Danielle Parsons, third, Halifax
- Katie Lines, skip, Halifax.
The men's team consists of:
- Ben Mayhew, lead, Bedford
- Kien Houk, second, Fall River, Halifax Regional Municipality
- Alex Moriarty, third, Halifax
- Paul Dexter, skip, St. Margarets Bay, Halifax Regional
Municipality.
The men's team is managed by Alan Mayhew and coached by veteran curler Monica Moriarty, whose son Alex, plays the third position. With 30 years experience, a very competitive Ms. Moriarty said "I'm careful not to put too much pressure on the team."
"I competed in the Games so it's a treat to have a child compete," Ms. Moriarty. "My son happens to enjoy the game and he's good at it. I'm very lucky."
In preparation for the Games, both teams will continue weekly training routines and compete in the upcoming provincial under-18 curling championships, from Feb. 9-11 in Brookfield, Colchester Co.

The Canada Games is the country's largest amateur multi-sport event. More than 3,600 athletes, coaches and managers will gather in Whitehorse to compete for 1,122 medals in 22 sports.
