Emergency Call-takers, Dispatchers Honoured

Nova Scotia's Emergency Management Office, is honouring 911 call-takers and emergency dispatchers during National Public Safety Telecommunicators' Week, April 8-14.

"911 call-takers and emergency dispatchers are often unsung heroes, working diligently to protect the health, safety and property of Nova Scotians," said Carolyn Bolivar-Getson, Minister of Emergency Management. "Their dedication to public safety results in countless lives saved each and every year."

Hundreds of Nova Scotians rely on the expertise and dedication of public safety telecommunicators every day. From an initial call to 911, through to the dispatch of emergency responders, these dedicated individuals provide a vital link to emergency services.

Their skill in emergency situations allows for rapid response and compassion in times of great distress. They ensure prompt and accurate response through the collection of vital information, including the nature of the emergency and location.

"Public safety telecommunicators support the work of emergency response across the province," said Craig MacLaughlan, CEO of EMO. "This week is an opportunity to officially recognize the contribution of Nova Scotia's emergency call-takers and dispatchers."

There are four 911 call centres in Nova Scotia -- in Kentville, Truro, Halifax and Sydney -- providing contracted services to the province. The Emergency Management Office is responsible for administering the provincewide 911 emergency reporting service and works closely with all emergency response agencies.
