Kids in the Forest Field Trips

Hundreds of elementary school students are getting the chance to explore Nova Scotia's natural resources. The Department of Natural Resources has helped plan three fun and educational events in May to bring young people in touch with nature.

"The Kids in the Forest program was created to give all children in Nova Scotia the opportunity to be engaged with nature," said Natural Resources Minister David Morse. "The forest can stimulate creativity, physical activity and reduce stress in young people. Yet, many young people may not ever have the opportunity to travel to the woods without this program."

About 250 Grade 6 school children from Halifax Regional Municipality are expected to spend a day in the forest on Thursday, May 3. The field trip will take place at Beaverbank Lake, north of Middle Sackville on Route 354.

Students will rotate between stations that include displays on aquatic life, helicopter crews, wildfire prevention, wildlife adaptation, water quality, silviculture treatments, rocks and minerals and forest harvesting.

Other Kids in the Forest field trips will take place in Digby County and the village of Whycocomagh. On Wednesday, May 9, and Thursday, May 10, students will explore a forest near Digby High School, and on May 23, Whycocomagh Provincial Park will hold an event.
