Linda Carvery Appointed Federal Citizenship Judge

Carolyn Bolivar-Getson, Minister of Immigration and Minister responsible for the Advisory Council on the Status of Women Act, congratulates council member Linda Carvery on her recent federal appointment as a citizenship judge in Halifax.

"Ms. Carvery's appointment is wonderful news. I am confident her commitment to this position will parallel her dedication to her community overall," said Ms. Bolivar-Getson.

Ms. Carvery is an entrepreneur with interests in the community, economic and social development and the arts. She has worked for many years on behalf of persons with disabilities, families in crisis and youths and is former executive director of the African Nova Scotian Training Centre.

In addition to longtime involvement on the Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women, Ms. Carvery has served the community through the National Parole Board, the Congress of Black Women, Symphony Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Arts Council.

"The council has benefitted from Ms. Carvery's caring and expert participation for many years," Ms. Bolivar-Getson said. "Now the citizens of Canada will benefit from one of Nova Scotia's leading women."

She is also a singer and recording artist and winner of the East Coast Music Award Jazz Artist of the Year.

During Ms. Carvery's three-year term as a citizenship judge, she will make decisions concerning citizenship applications, preside over citizenship ceremonies and administer the oath to new citizens.
