Justice Ministers Meet to Discuss Public Safety Issues

Justice

Justice Minister Murray Scott met last week in New Brunswick with Atlantic ministers to discuss public safety issues. Ministers from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and the deputy minister of Newfoundland and Labrador used the opportunity to set priorities and prepare for upcoming federal/provincial/territorial meetings in November.

"This meeting was an opportunity to solidify our shared position on a number of issues as Atlantic justice ministers," said Mr. Scott. "We had a good discussion on key issues, including recommendations to improve the Youth Criminal Justice Act."

Also among the priorities set by the ministers was a joint call to increase federal legal-aid funding. Other topics discussed included organized crime, specialized courts, and Youth Criminal Justice Act pre-trial detention issues.

"We face many similar issues in the Atlantic provinces," said Mr. Scott. "I thank my colleagues for their support and look forward to continuing to work together to make our Atlantic communities safer and stronger."
