Justice Minister Murray Scott is congratulating Nova Scotian cadets and all recent graduates of the Atlantic Police Academy. Mr. Scott was a speaker at the September convocation in Summerside, P.E.I. Eighteen of the graduating class are from Nova Scotia.

"These graduates should be extremely proud of all they have accomplished, said Mr. Scott. "They have chosen one of the most difficult and honourable professions -- defending what is right and just in society."

The Atlantic Police Academy is one of six nationally recognized police training academies. The 35-week program includes 10 weeks of required on-the-job training in a municipal or RCMP police agency.

"Here in Nova Scotia we are adding 250 new officer positions over four years and I know that many of these new officers will begin their law enforcement careers at the Atlantic Police Academy," said Mr. Scott.

Many of Nova Scotia's current law enforcement personnel are graduates of the academy, including Edgar MacLeod, incoming academy executive director and retired chief of the Cape Breton Regional Police Service.

"Chief MacLeod is an excellent choice to lead the police academy," said Mr. Scott. "He brings a wealth of experience and innovation in delivering policing services and working with communities."
