Road Sign Unveiled

Democracy 250

Democracy 250 co-chairs Dr. John Hamm and Russell MacLellan took their message about the importance of democracy on the road today, Oct. 2, with the unveiling of the first of seven highway signs promoting next year's 250th anniversary of parliamentary democracy in Canada.

The sign, located on Bell Boulevard, invites Nova Scotians and visitors alike to join next year's celebrations.

The unveiling coincides with a significant date in Canada's history. It was on Oct. 2, 1758 that the first parliamentary assembly of its kind met in what is now Canada. "It was a proud first for Nova Scotia and a significant milestone in the evolution of democracy in our country," Mr. Hamm said.

"In celebrating this important anniversary, we hope to shine the spotlight on a proud part of Nova Scotia's past, as well as encourage Nova Scotians and other Canadians to participate in the democratic process," said Mr. MacLellan.

Additional signs will be erected at key entrance points to the province in the coming weeks.

Democracy 250, a non-partisan body unanimously supported by an act of the Nova Scotia legislature, is responsible for promoting and planning next year's celebrations.
