Provincial Parks Look Back on Successful Season

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

It has been an exciting season for Nova Scotia's provincial parks.

Even more people showed interest in the province's popular parks, with more people visiting, taking part in events and using the new reservation system. Tens of thousands of people experienced everything the province's nature resorts have to offer.

"We continue to look for new ways to improve Nova Scotia's campgrounds and our visitors' experience," Natural Resources Minister David Morse said today, Nov. 6. "Our updated reservation system was a great addition to our customer-service achievements, making our parks more convenient and accessible."

For the first time, campers were able to book a specific site at a favorite park by phone or online. There were more than 50,000 overnight stays at the campsites, 800 more than during the 2006 season. And about 25 per cent of the reservations were made by people from outside Nova Scotia.

Many programs and activities took place at campgrounds and day-use parks throughout the province this season. Parks are for People events run throughout the camping season and beyond. They include a broad variety of activities, bringing a new excitement to the outdoors. Community involvement and many volunteers are key to the success of Parks are for People events.

"Community support and exceptional staff and volunteers at all of our provincial parks contributed to this year's success," said Mr. Morse. "Parks promote healthy, active living and we are encouraged by this year's increased involvement."

At least 15 provincial parks took part in Parks Day on July 21, a national day to celebrate parks through recreational and cultural activities. Thousands enjoy Park Day events for all ages and interests at Nova Scotia parks each year.

"We are already beginning to plan for next year, looking for new and interesting ways to provide even more opportunities for people to get out and enjoy the natural features and wonderful views of our provincial parks," said Mr. Morse.
