Province Responds to Town of Westville

Acting Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations Angus MacIsaac congratulated the Town of Westville today, Nov. 6, on taking the necessary steps to ensure its citizens continue to receive essential municipal services.

"We recognize and appreciate the effort of the Westville Town Council in accomplishing this goal," said Mr. MacIsaac.

Westville has negotiated an agreement with the Town of New Glasgow ensuring the delivery of municipal services such as street maintenance, engineering, and water and sewer maintenance.

However, the town is still required to conduct an analysis of the best long-term option to provide effective service delivery to the people of Westville.

As a result, the province, under Section 454 of the Municipal Government Act will be directing a review of the town and the issues presently facing council. Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations will be appointing an individual to conduct the review before March 31, 2008.

The review will take place, in part, to ensure the progress council has made continues.

In August, a ministerial order was issued by Jamie Muir, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, over concerns about governance and the town's ability to provide essential services to its citizens.
