Maritime Museum Commemorates Halifax Explosion

Nova Scotia Museum

In commemoration of the 90th Anniversary of the Halifax Explosion, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic has planned two special events meant to further the public's knowledge of this historic event.

On Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 7:30 p.m., museum curator Dan Conlin and research associate David Walker will present Shattered Ship: The remains of the Mont Blanc.

When the munitions ship Mont Blanc exploded in Halifax Harbour on Dec. 6, 1917, fragments of the vessel landed throughout Halifax and Dartmouth. Mr. Conlin and Mr. Walker's free talk will explore the paths of those fragments and the significance of their final resting places.

On Thursday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m., the Maritime Museum will host The Halifax Explosion: A Tribute in Song and Word. This musical presentation, performed by local musicians and featuring original music by David Stone, will spotlight tales from the explosion that are filled with sadness and sorrow, but also strength and courage.

Admission to the concert is $5. Proceeds will benefit the Atlantic Provinces Special Education Authority and the Halifax School for the Blind, in honour of the numerous survivors who sustained eye injuries from the blast.
