Committee to Review Pension Benefits Legislation

Environment and Labour (Oct. 2000 - March 2008)

Three experts have been appointed to review Nova Scotia's pension benefits legislation.

Bill Black, former president and CEO of Maritime Life will chair the committee. Ron Pink, an experienced labour lawyer, and Dick Crawford, former CEO of Maritime Life and former president of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, will also be part of the committee.

"Pensions are an important issue for Nova Scotians and this review will help identify any problems that may exist in our current legislation," said Mark Parent, Minister of Environment and Labour. "We want our legislation to be modern, efficient and beneficial to all employees and employers in Nova Scotia."

The committee will meet various industry stakeholders, including business and labour groups, to identify pension concerns for employees and employers.

"I look forward to meeting with key stakeholders to hear what they have to say about improving Nova Scotia's pension benefits legislation," said Mr. Black. "Our committee will be working hard to make recommendations to the minister that will make a measurable difference in Nova Scotia."

The committee will be supported by staff at the Department of Environment and Labour and other pension experts, if required.

The committee is expected to make recommendations to government in late fall.
