Provincewide Spring Weight Restrictions to Start

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (Oct. 2007 - Feb. 2021)

Spring weight restrictions for heavy trucks will come into effect at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, across the province.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal had said that restrictions would begin March 10. However, mild weather this week is prompting an earlier closing to protect the province's roads.

Mild temperatures and a lack of frost in the ground mean provincial roads are more susceptible to damage from heavy trucks. The restrictions typically come into effect in early March. They are usually removed in late April or early May.

"The department realizes the implications of weight restrictions on the trucking industry," said Murray Scott, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. "Thanks to modern technology, the department is able to monitor the province's roads closely and will look for opportunities to temporarily re-open roads whenever possible."

A list of roads that are exempt from the restrictions will be advertised in newspapers on Thursday, March 6, and is posted on the department's website at http://www.gov.ns.ca/tran .
