Gypsum plant project needs more information

Environment and Labour (Oct. 2000 - March 2008)

An expansion request for a Hants County gypsum mine needs further study before it will be considered for approval.

"The project has raised some environmental considerations that can't be adequately answered with the information we have," said Mark Parent, Minister of Environment and Labour. "I am requesting a focus report from the proponent that will provide more data."

A focus report decision means the department will forward a terms of reference to Fundy Gypsum within 25 days. The terms will describe the structure and purpose of the report, and detail the specific issues to be addressed for the Miller's Creek project.

Once received, Fundy Gypsum will have up to one year to provide additional information to support the project.

"All environmental assessment decisions are based on the merits and information of the specific project. In this instance, I need more information," said Mr. Parent.

The decision is on the department's website at www.gov.ns.ca/enla/ea .
