Burning Permits Required Beginning April 1

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Nova Scotians who want to set fires within 305 metres of the woods will require a provincial burning permit in seven counties beginning Tuesday, April 1.

Residents of Yarmouth, Shelburne, Queens, Lunenburg, Annapolis, Kings and Digby counties will need the permits effective Tuesday. Permits are required in all remaining counties by Saturday, April 15.

The fire season is expected to last provincewide until Oct. 15.

"As a general rule, we try to discourage the use of grass fires," said Natural Resources Minister David Morse. "They simply are not beneficial to the land and out-of-control fires put wildlife and habitat at risk. However, anyone who does decide to use fire should be absolutely certain they have the appropriate permit and that they take all the necessary precautions."

Starting a fire without a provincial permit can result in a fine of up to $500, six months in jail, or both.

Landowners should also contact a local municipal government office to see if any additional permits are required.
