Province Celebrates Gaelic Awareness Month

Gaelic Affairs

May is Gaelic Awareness Month -- a time to celebrate and create greater awareness of Nova Scotia's Gaelic language and cultural heritage.

In Gaelic tradition, May 1 is the sunny day of the feast of Beltane or Là Buidhe Bealltainn, an important day that marks the beginning of the summer season.

"Because Là Buidhe Bealltainn represents newness and rebirth, it presents a great opportunity for Nova Scotians to learn more about one of the province's early languages and cultures," said Angus MacIsaac, Minister of Gaelic Affairs.

Throughout May, the Office of Gaelic Affairs will provide online Gaelic awareness information and learning opportunities, which will include Gaelic expressions, Gaelic foods, Gaelic surnames and a Gaelic map of Nova Scotia.

Other events include a film series, Gaelic immersion opportunities planned by Gaelic communities and organizations, and in-service training for teachers interested in Gaelic, sponsored by the Department of Education.

"To help celebrate Gaelic's presence in the province, the Office of Gaelic Affairs has been working with the Gaelic Council of Nova Scotia to develop an image for the Gaelic community in Nova Scotia," said Lewis MacKinnon, CEO of the Office of Gaelic Affairs. "When this image is unveiled later this month, it will serve as a source of identity, pride and inspiration for all who see the value of Gaelic language and culture and its significant contribution to our province."
