May is Motorcycle Awareness Month in Nova Scotia

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (Oct. 2007 - Feb. 2021)

To help remind all drivers that warmer weather leads to an increase in motorcycle traffic, the province, in partnership with Safety Services Nova Scotia, is proclaiming May as Motorcycle Awareness Month.

Murray Scott, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal read the proclamation to a cross-section of motorcycle users at a ceremony at Province House today.

"Twelve people were killed in motorcycle collisions in 2007 and that is unacceptable," said Mr. Scott. "We hope to one day eliminate fatalities entirely and we need the co-operation and effort of all drivers to reach this goal."

Last year's motorcycle fatalities in Nova Scotia, were double the total of 2006.

"Motorcyclists are more vulnerable to injury in a collision," said Nancy White of Safety Services Nova Scotia. "Make sure you drive defensively and be sure to wear your helmet and protective gear."

While it's up to motorcyclists to drive safely and wear helmets, Mr. Scott said all drivers need to be aware of the increased number of motorcycles on the road during the warmer months, and to take an extra look before turning into traffic.

"A moment's carelessness could cost a life," said Mr. Scott.
