Tenders Called for Cape Breton Road Improvements

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (Oct. 2007 - Feb. 2021)

The battle against next winter's potholes has begun. The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal is tendering a road-improvement contract for Inverness and Cape Breton counties.

The department has called tenders for crack sealing, crack filling and seal coating on the following road sections:

Inverness Co. -- Trunk 19 from 0.9 kilometres north of the
intersection of River Denys Mountain Road,
north for about 5.2 kilometres

Cape Breton Co. -- Alder Point Road, from the rail tracks north
for 7.3 kilometres to the end of the road

  • Little Pond Road from the intersection of
Route 305 for about 4.5 kilometres to the
    mine site.

"By filling the cracks and sealing the surface on these sections, we're making it harder for water to get into the road bed," said Murray Scott, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. "Once we get into the colder temperatures, that water helps cause pothole and cracking problems."

The project is part of government's commitment to better roads and infrastructure.

The department's highways division manages more than 23,000 kilometres of roads in Nova Scotia. It maintains 4,100 bridges and operates seven provincial ferries. Staff provide services from district offices in Bridgewater, Bedford, Truro and Sydney.
