New Face on Advisory Council on the Status of Women

The Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women will have a new face beginning Sunday, June 1. Jennie Orlando of Halifax joins the council for a two-year term, representing women in metro Halifax.

Ms. Orlando joins an experienced roster of members on the advisory council. She brings 25 years of experience working on social housing programs and volunteering for community organizations in Halifax Regional Municipality.

Council members for 2008-09 are: Liz Chisholm of Antigonish, elected chair until March 31; Jean d'Entremont of Argyle; Shelley Goodwin of Yarmouth; Anne Kelly of Lower Sackville; Patricia LeBlanc of Sydney; Holly Meuse of Bear River; Doreen Paris of New Glasgow; Sonja Power of Amherst; and Rita Warner of Judique.

"I am pleased to work with this experienced and diverse group of women, who are well-qualified to advise government on matters of concern to women," said Carolyn Bolivar-Getson, Minister responsible for the Advisory Council on the Status of Women. "It is essential that women from all walks of life be active in Nova Scotia's agencies, boards and commissions."

The council advises the provincial government and works with federal and municipal governments, community and business organizations, and universities to:

  • increase participation of women in decisions that affect their lives, families and communities
  • promote the economic equality of women
  • reduce violence against women
  • improve the health and well-being of women and their families.
