Province Offers $150,000 for Information in Slaunwhite Case

The 2006 murder of Harold James "Buster" Slaunwhite in Cape Breton is one of the cases which the Department of Justice is hoping an increased reward will lead to a conviction.

The reward, under Nova Scotia's Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes program has been increased from $50,000 to $150,000.

On Sept. 10, 2006, Buster Slaunwhite was found murdered in his residence at 97 Brook St., Dominion, Cape Breton. Mr. Slaunwhite was last seen operating his motor vehicle, a 2005 blue Ford Taurus, Nova Scotia licence plate BBV-949. Mr. Slaunwhite was an 83-year-old veteran who had served his country in the Second World War as a medic.

"The Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program is important because it reminds Nova Scotians of the responsibility we all share in terms of building safer communities," said Justice Minister Cecil Clarke. "It gives us an opportunity to help bring criminals to justice."

"We have invested a tremendous amount of time and resources in this case," said deputy chief Myles Burke of the Cape Breton Regional Police. "We feel that this investment by the province may be an incentive for people to come forward so that we can bring this case to the courts and obtain some closure for the family of Mr. Slaunwhite."
