First Police Long Service Awards Presented

Police officers from northern Nova Scotia were recognized for their contribution to law enforcement in the province through the new Nova Scotia Provincial Police Long Service Award Program.

Premier Rodney MacDonald and Justice Minister and Attorney General Cecil Clarke presented the awards today, Sept. 22, in a ceremony in Membertou.

"These inaugural awards recognize our longest serving members who deserve our support and thanks for their public service," said the premier.

The awards recognize police officers who have served in the province for 15 and 25 consecutive years.

"Without the hard work and dedication of these officers, Nova Scotia would not be the safe and secure place to live and work that we now enjoy," said Mr. Clarke. "The province of Nova Scotia is pleased to offer this small token of our appreciation for the difficult work they do on the front lines every day."

One hundred and four recipients from Cape Breton Regional Municipality and Guysborough and Antigonish counties were recognized with the award. Seventy two of them attended the ceremony. There will be a ceremony in Halifax in October for officers from the rest of the province.
