Province's First Job Fair for Newcomers

More than 350 job seekers and 35 employers are participating in the province's first job fair for newcomers today, Nov. 13.

"A good job is one of the biggest challenges facing newcomers and one of the most important factors in an immigrant's decision about where to settle," said Immigration Minister Len Goucher. "This job fair will help connect skilled workers with employers and contribute to a stronger economy."

Job seekers include immigrants, international graduates and international students who will graduate this spring from Nova Scotia universities or the Nova Scotia Community College. The employers represent a variety of sectors including aerospace, engineering, IT, financial services, manufacturing and more.

"In order to help newcomers find employment we also need to support our employers by providing services that help find and recruit immigrant professionals and integrate them into the workplace," said Lorena Costa, employer engager and human resources liaison, Metropolitan Immigrant Settlement Association. "That's why working with our partners on events such as this one is so important."

The event is organized by the Office of Immigration and Department of Labour and Workforce Development, along with the Greater Halifax Partnership, Metropolitan Immigrant Settlement Association, Halifax Immigrant Learning Centre, Pier 21 Society, Direction Emploi, Saint Mary's University, Mount Saint Vincent University and Nova Scotia Business Inc.
